TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A local organization that helps individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities is inviting the community to learn more about what they do.
Since March is National Intellectual Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Mosaic in Terre Haute is observing the month with the theme “My way, my day.”
Brenda Tryon, Community Relations Manager at Mosaic, said they have partnered with individuals to help them have a meaningful life and to connect with a caring community.
“Working with them to volunteer in the community, working with social skills, helping them to find jobs, giving them opportunities to live a full life in either an apartment or a group home setting,” Tryon explained.
Mosaic also has a self-advocacy program called Voices for Change. Both the Vice President of Self-Advocacy, Shaylee Argenziano, and the Secretary, Elizabeth Snavely shared their experiences with the program and why self-advocacy is so important.
“I think it’s making me a better person. I hope to continue to do the best I can in helping others learning their rights and what’s wrong and what’s not right,” Argenziano said.
“Voices for Change, we’re doing a lot with it. We’re actually trying to also plan to go to other places and teach people about disabilities, intellectual disabilities, to make people more familiar with it,” Snavely said.
The community is invited to learn more about mosaic through some upcoming events called “Discover the Possibilities”.
