The crashed occurred around 9:44 a.m. Nov. 2 on U.S. 36 near Raccoon Lake Bridge when a van driven by Steven Miller Ealy, 66, of Danville, Indiana struck the rear end of an Amish buggy carrying a family of four.
Tina Detweiler, 24, and her 2-year-old son were killed in the crash. Her husband, Abram Detweiler and their 5-month-old daughter were flown to Indianapolis hospitals for treatment.
As part of the investigation, Ealy submitted to a chemical test that revealed no alcohol or drugs were in his system at the time of the accident.
According to Parke County Sheriff Justin Cole, there was no evidence to suggest that Ealy was driving in a reckless manner. Instead, he said, a recent chip and seal on the road surface may have played a factor with the black buggy blending in with the black pavement from a distance.
