SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is trying to revive his plan to allow community colleges to offer four-year degree programs.
It would allow some community colleges to offer four-year degrees in specific areas. Those areas include nursing, cyber security and early childhood education.
However, not everyone is sold on the idea. The Illinois House Black Caucus said it could hurt minorities and underfunded universities.
“Chicago State is hemorrhaging, and you as an administration are handing them Band-Aids and they need stitches. And then you come in and you provide a bill that’s going to be even worse for them. And I’m saying as we sit here, the Black Caucus has an issue with the bill. The sponsors are obviously aware that it’s not a secret,” said State Rep. Curtis J. Tarver.
The bill is now heading to the Illinois House Floor.
