VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – It’s almost cicada season. Cicadas live underground and feed on the sap from trees before emerging as adults.
Tabby Flinn, an Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator for the Purdue Extension Office, said even though cicadas may appear intimidating, they are harmless. She shared a fun fact about these interesting creatures.
“They spend most of their life underground. So, every year our annual cicadas emerge, they spend about a year underground before they’re emerging,” explained Flinn. “Periodical cicadas can be anywhere from 13 to 17 years before they emerge out of the ground.”
When the area had a large number of cicadas, it was due to both annuals and periodicals emerging at the same time, but that’s not the case this year.
