GREENE COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Greene County Sheriff’s Department sent out a release Wednesday warning drivers to stay away from the area due to hazards from the recent tornado.
Greene County was hit by a tornado on May 16, which caused considerable damage to several homes, farms, and businesses, including one death.
In the release, the sheriff’s department thanked the 22 agencies that have been assisting in emergency response and recovery efforts as well as the others who offered support.
“Everyone worked really well together,” said Sheriff George Dallaire. “We are fortunate to have a good working relationship with so many wonderful agencies. We are grateful to all those who came to help and to those who called and offered their assistance. It is unfortunate that someone lost their life.”
The sheriff finished the release by telling drivers to stay out of the area unless needed. The sheriff warned that several hazards are still in the area. He went on to say that a lot of heavy equipment is out working on cleaning up debris and on recovery. The department also said they are currently running extra patrols.
Roger Axe with the Greene County Emergency Management Agency has also stated that due to a lack of manpower and money, there will be no debris pickup in Greene County. County officials have said to bring debris to the Greene County Recycling Center located at 4316 West Base Road in Switz City. They will accept trees and limbs, metal, and plant life but not tires.
Regular business hours for the Greene County Recycling Center are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
