FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Hoosiers planning to travel for Memorial Day will have plenty of company out on the roads and at the airport.
AAA is predicting record numbers for travel over the holiday weekend. It is expected to be the first time we’ve seen travel numbers higher than 2019, before the COVID pandemic, according to the AAA Motor Club. Across the country, more than 45 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles over the Memorial Day holiday.
More than 970,000 of those will be Hoosiers. Specifically, 883,000 Hoosiers will be driving, about 52,000 will be flying, and 35,000 will use other modes of travel. Memorial Day travel has been gradually bouncing back from the pandemic over the last five years. According to these predictions, that recovery is now complete.
“So we’re now kind of back on track with that trend of increased travel each year that was going on since like 2002,” said Christina Griffiths from the AAA Hoosier Motor Club.
The window for Memorial Day travel is between Thursday, May 22nd, and Monday, May 26th. If you’re planning a road trip during that time, just be ready for a lot of traffic. Plan to leave early, give yourself extra time, and expect some delays. Also, definitely check your route for any road construction because there’s plenty of that going on.
