SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Human Society of Sullivan County (THSSC) is working to get more animals adopted.
THSSC recently received a PetSmart Charities grant to help increase adoptions.
Officials at the shelter say the $25,000 grant will help increase in-store adoptions while reducing the barriers to adoption.
Leaders say the shelter has seen an increase in cat adoptions through its PetSmart partnership, so now the focus is on increasing dog adoptions.
To do that, Tina Baker, Director of Operations at The Humane Society of Sullivan County says the shelter is working to make the adoption process easier through programs like ‘Foster to Adopt.’
“If you’re on the fence about adopting and you’re not sure if an animal is a right fit for you, we’re offering ‘Foster to adopt,'” Baker said. “It’s a two-week trial period, you have to fill out the application and there’s a couple of steps you have to go through and hopefully this will help you decide if that animal is the right fit for you,” she added.
Baker said grants like this one go a long way to helping the shelter meet its mission.
“Our cost of operating versus what we’re contracted with counties in the towns, it doesn’t cover our operating expenses. So, the grants fundraisers, private donations, they go a long way,” she said.
