TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — At St. Mary of the Woods College Saturday, many teenagers made a difference for the Sisters of Providence.
Volunteers assisted the sisters, along with health care residents, through activities such as bingo, exercise, baking, and card making.
Many of them are planning to go into a health care related field and enjoy getting the opportunity to perform similar tasks that they hope to make a career out of.
The volunteers said their biggest goal of the day was to just make a sister or resident smile.
Many of them, like Pia Carino, have been coming to help out for years now.
Carino says the more times she goes, the more enjoyment she gets out of the day.
“At first I was going out of some sort of obligation to volunteer, but after I went more times, it started becoming something that I really wanted to keep doing”, Carino said. “I really like interacting with the sisters because they have so much knowledge and life experiences that we can learn from, just by sitting and talking with them.”
The volunteers said a lot of them were a little scared, at first, to get out of their comfort zone and do this, but now they recommend the opportunity to all who are seeking experience helping others.
