TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — On January 20, people all around the country will be honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
This year the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will be honoring MLK’s legacy by giving back to the community, by inviting the public to volunteer at DNR properties around the state of Indiana.
There are 100 DNR properties around the state, including 37 state parks, according to Volunteer Coordinator for Indiana State Parks, Jody Heaston.
Heaston said people volunteer at their properties year-round, whether that’s picking up litter along the trails, helping at special events or painting structures.
“We have people that volunteer for us on a regular basis because they just enjoy working with the staff. They enjoy being outside and they just enjoy what they do. It gives them purpose to come out and help us to maintain and preserve and conserve our properties for generations to come.”
