VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Tuesday night, after multiple rounds of voting, a new state representative was chosen.
Vermillion County Commissioner Tim Yocum went through his final commissioner meeting Wednesday night, as he prepares for his new role as State Representative of District 42.
Yocum says the decision to run was all about the local community.
“I’m looking forward to meeting the people, networking, working with the different commissioners and different councils in District 42”, Yocum said. “To try and come up with some way, every two months or three months, to have a meeting with all the commissioners and all the council. To figure out what we need in the 42nd, that I can take back and present to the house.”
In Indianapolis, Yocum has come in too late to present bills, but he will still be able to make an impact.
“All I can do is vote on bills that have already been presented, so I am mainly a learning procedure”, Yocum said. “Next year, I will be able to get more into the presenting and offer up bills next year.”
Yocum says the time he has spent in local government will help him greatly.
“The past 10 years of being commissioner, I know how government works locally and the value of local government”, Yocum said. “By going to the next level at the statehouse, I appreciate that and understand how local government works. The communication with local government, for the past, will be very important to me in my future at the statehouse.”
With Yocum leaving his role as commissioner, the county will have 30 days to complete a caucus for the position of county commissioner in district 2.
