DUGGER, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Lonnie Bedwell, a blind veteran from Sullivan County, has returned to Dugger after successfully climbing the highest peak in Antarctica and skiing to the South Pole.
Bedwell said it was very challenging and said the experience is hard to put into words but described Antarctica as a magical place. He also said it was surreal when he arrived at the South Pole.
The accomplishment brings Bedwell closer to his goal of climbing the highest peak on all seven continents. He said he has been blessed to have traveled the world and added that he hopes his journey inspires others.
“What pushes me to do this is to let people dream. to show them what is possible. And, hopefully they’ll realize that they can. They can do so much more than they think they can. If we just simply help each other, believe in ourselves and each other, hopefully it makes a difference to somebody out there,” said Bedwell.
As for what’s next for Bedwell, he said he wants to ski to the North Pole. He also wants to climb to the highest peaks in Australia and Europe, which would complete his goal of climbing the highest peak on every continent.
