SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— A new program with the Sullivan County Public Library is helping elementary age students read with confidence.
The library teamed up with the Humane Society of Sullivan County to start their new program Paws to Read. This program allows students 2nd through 5th grade to read to cats at the humane society. Students can benefit from this program by practicing to read aloud without fear of criticism, which can boost their fluency.
Books are provided by the library and students can also bring there own.
“It’s just a very positive experience. The kids are comfortable. They don’t have to worry about the cats judging them, you know if they mess up a word. And the cats absolutely pay attention and interact with the kids,” Youth Services Coordinator April Cox said.
For those interested in the program, can register their student by visiting the library’s website.
