TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Vigo County School Corporation’s Aviation Academy is the 35th career pathway that will be offered for high school students.
Juniors and seniors will be able to come out to the airport and learn the basics of what it takes to be employed in the aviation field. Vigo County School Corporation’s Career and Technical Education Director Doug Dillion said the demand for these types of jobs are taking off.
“We want to make sure that we position these kids to be heavily involved in aviation so we can meet that demand and hopefully we can land some big distributor that is using this technology,” said Dillion.
Terre Haute Regional Airports Executive Director Craig Maschino said that this project has been in the works for two years and it was made possible due to the addition of a solar farm on their property.
“The revenue from the solar farm is going to help fund this Aviation Academy,” said Maschino. “It is a win-win the fact that we are reducing our carbon footprint and taking that revenue to help fund this aviation academy, so it is a win-win for everyone.”
Maschino said that this program will open doors in this area that will keep these students in our community.
“We want them to stay and grow Terre Haute,” said Maschino. “Jobs in the 100-thousand-dollar range for average salary can help Terre Haute as well.”
Dillion added that students in the neighboring school corporations are also going to be able to take classes through this program.
