FARMERSBURG, Ind. WTWO/WAWV)— Indiana American Water and its foundation have announced a donation of $7,000 in hunger relief funds to a Terre Haute organization.
According to a news release, The American Water Charitable Foundation in association with Indiana American Water announced it will be awarding $7,000 to Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank as a part of its $44,000 pledge to fight hunger in Indiana. The money was put together as State Strategic Impact grants to help address food insecurities in the state.
“During the holiday season, it’s vital to remember those in need. Donating to hunger relief organizations provides essential nourishment and also brings hope and joy to families facing difficult times,” said Matthew Prine, president of Indiana American Water. “We are deeply honored to partner with these organizations, helping ensure our support reaches the communities where it is needed most. Together, we can make a profound difference and spread the true spirit of the season.”
The release stated that the food insecurity rate in Indiana is currently sitting at 13.2% which means that one in eight people in Indiana struggle to find access to nutritious food. This can lead to both physical and mental health issues, affect the development of young people, and increase healthcare costs.
The State Strategic Impact grants are part of the 2024 Keep Communities Flowing Grant Program used to support high-impact projects throughout American Water’s national footprint. The other grants issued through Indiana were $20,000 to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, $10,000 to Second Helpings of Greater Indianapolis, and $7,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana.
