VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Many faith leaders are calling on Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb to halt the state’s plans to resume executions this month. Those speaking out include a justice promoter from the Sisters of Providence.
Sister Barbara Battista voiced her thoughts on why the state should not go through with their first execution since 2009. She says that all life is precious, and the people and government alike should not be able to decide who deserves to live and who deserves to die. She cited that the majority of states have either abolished the death penalty, or placed it under moratorium.\
“What makes us think that killing a person who killed someone sends the message that killing is wrong,” Battista said. “What we are doing as a people, the government is doing in my name and your name, the government is doing exactly what they say is the wrong thing to do.”\
Sister Battista says she has written letters to Governor Holcomb and signed many petitions to stop the execution of of convicted murderer, Joseph Corcoran, that’s taking place December 18 at the state prison in Michigan City.
