TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— A jury trial originally scheduled for Monday for the murder of Chloe Carroll has been pushed back until June 23, 2025.
The defendant in the case, Montez Ellington Jr., filed for a motion of continuance on October 8 which was granted to give both parties more time to work on the case. The motion was granted and the trial was rescheduled for the middle of 2025.
The now 18-year-old was already scheduled to be tried as an adult after charges were brought against him in the July 2021 murder of Carroll. According to court documents, Ellington Jr. is charged with murder, attempted murder, and criminal recklessness. Though the murder occurred when he was 15 years old, Ellington Jr. is being tried in an adult court and was moved from the Vigo County Juvenile Justice Center to the Vigo County Jail.
The charges stem from the 2021 shooting death of Chloe Carroll. Carroll, who was 15, was killed on July 23, 2021, when officers responded to a report of shots fired near 13th and Poplar Streets. Police said Carroll had been among a group of teens and was in the back passenger seat of a vehicle parked at the Hoosier Pete Mini Mart when she was shot.
