TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Indiana State Professor of history, Dr. Barbara Skinner, has been selected to join the Ukrainian History Global Initiative. The project is designed to become one of the most comprehensive explorations of Ukranian history to date, inculding perspectives from over 90 experts world wide.
The framework was initially launched in 2023 under the leadership of Timothy Synder, a Yale historian. For the project, scholars will break down Ukraine’s history into smaller sections, covering everything from early human settlements to contemporary Ukranian literature.
Dr. Skinner is an expert on Ukrainian religion and imperial history. Her role in the project will be to contribute a detailed study on the role of empire and religion in Ukraine from 1700 to 1900. This will aim to fill a gap in global history, by highlighting Ukraine’s unique historical trajectory and its impact on world events.
“This project is intended to offer a balanced view of Ukraine’s rich and complex history, countering a longstanding focus on Russo-centric narratives,” Dr. Skinner stated. “It is a unique opportunity for involving not only historians but archaeologists, anthropologists, political scientists, and art historians to study Ukraine’s history within the broader trends of world history, from ancient empires to the present.”
The project has a three-year timeline, reflecting its dedication to present a well rounded narrative. The scholars involved hope to create a lasting resource for understanding Ukraine’s global significance and ensuring Ukrainian stories recive internationall attention.
