SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Several local schools held celebrations to kick off Halloween.
At Dugger Union Elementary, students and their teachers walked through the gymnasium with students and spectators in the crowd. The tradition has continued since the school re-opened back in 2015. Junior High/HS principal Darin Simpson says it gives the students an opportunity to showcase their costumes to the public.
“I think it gives them the spotlight,” Simpson said. “It gives them a chance to shine and we have really good turnout throughout all of our elementary grades of kids dressing up in costume and again, it just gives them a chance to shine and puts the spotlight on them.”
Students at Sullivan Elementary also participated in a walk around their gymnasium. Several organizations and businesses set up tables to distribute candy to the costumed kids. The rainy weather moved the event inside, but Mayor JD Wilson says everyone still had a great time and got lots of candy.
“It gives them a break from the classroom and everything, come out here and get the candy, see all the great tables that are set up, interact with all the people, they love it,” Wilson said. “They have a bag full of candy to go home with, they’re going to be eating candy for weeks. Last night in the City of Sullivan we had a great turnout, tonight’s going to be a great turnout, so Halloween time, we just love it here and it can’t get any better than this. It’s all about those kids and giving them candy.”
Wilson added that there are several Halloween events taking place across Sullivan.
