TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A new hit comedy movie was co-written by a Wabash Valley native.
The new comedy movie titled “Let’s Start A Cult” is now showing in theaters nationwide. One of it’s co-stars, Wes Haney, is from Terre Haute. The 2001 graduate of Terre Haute South High School says that his big break came from Conan O’Brien.
“I never really took it seriously as something I could do until my senior year of high school when I went to New York for the first time,” Haney said. “I went to a taping of Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and he wound up putting me on the show. He came out to warm up the audience and saw me there and then he just wouldn’t leave me alone.”
Haney co-wrote and co-stars alongside actor and comedian Stavros Halkias. Haney says the movie is more of a throwback comedy.
“It’s kind of like 90s to early 2000s style comedy, really inspired by movies like Billy Madison, Tommy Boy, just big, fun comedies,” Haney said. “You’re not really going to learn anything, it’s just a good time at the movies.”
The film features an obnoxious cult member who teams up with his former leader to gain a new following.
“It’s really cool,” Haney said. “I’m excited that people from all over the country can see it, and my friends and family back home can see it too and experience it in a theater, that’s really the best way to see it, with people in a theater. Especially in a comedy, that’s really the way to do it.”
There are only two more showtimes scheduled at the Terre Haute AMC as of now. They are set for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on October 30.
