FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Indiana was listed as the safest state for workers according to a study by personal injury law specialists John Foy and Associates.
The study looked into OSHA data from the beginning of 2015 to the end of 2023 and looked at the number of severe workplace injuries per 100,000 residents. Indiana ranked number one with .56 severe injuries per 100,000 residents which comes in at 98.07% lower than the national average of 28.75 per 100,000. In the nine-year span only 38 severe injuries were reported among the 6,833,037 Indiana residents.
Illinois on the other hand ranks in at #30 on the list with 5,331 injuries over the nine-year study period. Though with a population size of 12,582,032, they end up with a ranking of 42.37 out of every 100,000 residents which puts them at 47.36% above the national average.
The study goes on to state that of the total 87,933 reported injuries nationwide, nearly a third of them come from the manufacturing industry with 28,996 injuries. This is nearly double the second most dangerous industry, construction at 15,607 injuries. Transportation and warehousing come in third with 7,806 and retail trade comes in fourth with 6,670 and wholesale trade rounding out the top five with 5,041.
“Certain areas are seeing a notably higher frequency of such incidents, underscoring the importance of ongoing efforts to improve workplace safety standards nationwide,” said John Foy, of John Foy & Associates. “These findings serve as a crucial reminder for employers to prioritize safety measures and enhance enforcement to protect workers’ well-being.”
