TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Rosedale man has been arrested after police say his vehicle struck an ejected driver of a UTV after a crash and fled the scene.
According to the Terre Haute Police Department, the crash occurred in the area of N. Fruitridge and 7th Avenues at 3:30 p.m. on July 17. Investigating officers determined that a UTV had been travelling on the roadway when it veered out of its lane and struck the rear end of another vehicle.
The impact caused the UTV driver to lose control of the vehicle and strike a nearby tractor that was mowing the grass along the roadway. The crash caused the driver of the UTV to be ejected from the vehicle where he was then struck by another vehicle that had been headed in the same direction.
The victim was then flown to an Indianapolis hospital for what have been described as serious injuries. Police said the injured driver remains hospitalized as of Monday morning.
Police said the vehicle that struck the driver stopped briefly, but then fled the scene.
Following an investigation that included interviews of witnesses and review of surveillance footage, police arrested Jerry D. Mills, 47, of Rosedale.
Police called for the following charges;
- Leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury
- Driving while suspended resulting in injury
- Operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license
- Operating a vehicle without financial responsibility with a prior conviction
A Vigo County Judge found probable cause for arrest of Mills, and gave prosecutor’s 72 hours to file formal charges. Mills bond was set at $35,000 with no 10% allowed.
