MATTOON, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — An investigation is underway into the cause of a house fire that left two residents displaced in the city of Mattoon.
According to Mattoon Firefighters #691, the fire occurred at a home in the 2000 block of Champaign Avenue at 6:06 p.m. on Sunday.
When firefighters arrived on scene they spotted flames coming from the west side of the two story home. Initial investigation showed that the majority of the fire was on the outside of the structure. Firefighters said it had spread inside through a door that had been left open.
Two residents were able to escape the home before fire crews arrived. No injuries were reported. It took crews approximately 20 minutes to extinguish the fire.
Fire Chief Jeff Hilligoss said the cause remains under investigation, however the fire is not considered suspicious.
Red Cross was contacted to assist the displaced residents.
Chief Hilligoss noted that crews were assisted by members of the Charleston Fire Department, Lincoln Fire Protection District, as well as Ameren Gas and Electric and American Red Cross.
