TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — This weekend, Special Olympics Indiana will celebrate its summer games in Terre Haute.
The city has hosted the games for the past 55 years. This year 2,100 athletes will compete between June 7-9 on the campuses of Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Special Olympics works to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
CEO of Special Olympics Indiana Jeff Mohler said this wouldn’t be possible without the support from the city of Terre Haute.
“That is what it means for us at Special Olympics is this openness that the Terre Haute community has given to us, stepping up to the plate and allowing us to be successful so then our athletes can be successful,” Mohler said.
Opening ceremony for the summer games will take place this Friday at Hulman Center. WTWO’s own Julie Henricks will be the emcee.
