FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – After graduating from college with a teaching degree in the early 1980’s, Nancy Liston returned to her hometown of Farmersburg, but she didn’t plan to stay. However, she ran into one of her former coaches at a football game.
“Mr. Wilbur Crooks came to me and said, ‘Would you like to be my assistant girls basketball coach?’ My first answer was no not really, because I don’t plan on staying,” joked Liston.
That was 40 years ago. Now she’s about to retire as principal of the high school she once attended.
“I bleed green and white. I bleed green and white and I’ve always bled green and white,” Liston added.
Liston was in the very first kindergarten class in the Northeast School Corporation in Sullivan County. Except for the 4 years she attended college, she’s remained part of the same school corporation.
Over the years, she’s been a teacher, coach and athletic director. Five years ago she accepted the principal’s position. She said she knows her students well and that’s what she will miss once she retires.
“I went to school with these kids’ grandparents. I taught their parents and now I have them and there’s not to many people that I don’t know their history,” said Liston.
North Central’s graduation takes place on Saturday.
