TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A local prosecutor spoke on what led to the arrest of 26-year-old Denia Long on Monday.
Long initially told police that she accidentally shot and killed her husband. After more than a year, the lab results came back. Vigo County prosecutor Terry Modesitt says the results tell a different story.
“The state police lab testing, as far as the probable cause statement,” he said. “It showed that her statement is incorrect and that it’s impossible as far as the state police lab report, that it could have happened the way she said it happened.”
The handgun was sent to a lab at the Indiana State Police firearms division after law enforcement noticed that the clip did not fit properly. Despite these recent findings, Modesitt noted that the case is not over and the legal process must continue.
“You know again, it’s up to a jury to decide how strong the evidence is and whether someone is guilty or not guilty but that’s what we stated in our affidavit of probable cause,” he said. “The report of that testing discounted her story and showed that it could not have happened the way that she said.”
Long’s initial hearing was on Tuesday and she is set to have her next hearing on June 3.
