TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The 8th annual Buddy Walk brought locals to ISU Memorial Stadium earlier today.
The free event welcomed individuals with Down Syndrome along with their friends, family and supporters. Over 600 participants were registered for the one-mile walk, and event coordinator Dixie Russell says it shows no sign of slowing down.
“Our very first year we had closer to 500 participants,” she said. “We had a lag with COVID but the last two years we had a really great turnout. It grows a little bit more every year and we raise more awareness in our community.”
Russell has a daughter with Down Syndrome, and she hopes this event can help the community be more aware and accepting.
Macy Pohl is the executive director for Down Syndrome Indiana, but she started out as a volunteer at the event several years ago. She has seen firsthand how this event helps families.
“I also see it from the staff level,” she said. “These funds and what we are able to do here today make a long-lasting impact throughout the year.”
