TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Happy hour deals may be making a return to the Hoosier State.
Happy hour discount specials have been illegal in Indiana since 1985. For the last 40 years, bars and restaurants were only allowed to offer discounts on alcoholic drinks if it was an all-day promotion.
House Bill 1086 is set to change that, albeit with some restrictions in place. These include not being able to exceed four hours in a single day and 15 hours in one week.
Additionally, the drink discounts cannot be offered between the hours of 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. The owner of Treehouse Eatery and Drinkery Max Bedrava said that this change will be very advantageous for the business.
“I think repealing the happy hour ban is going to help local businesses be able to target certain hours of the day that they are struggling with,” he said.
Bedrava also added how a change this big could change up how these types of businesses run.
“When something like this changes, smart business minds will jump on it immediately,” he said. “There are so many fun and engaging promotions you can do with happy hours that can completely change the landscape of a business.”
Gov. Holcomb still has to sign this into law. If he does, it will go into effect on July 1st.
