WASHINGTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A man charged with murder in a Washington shooting that left three people struck by gunfire, with one deceased, had been to the home with a different gun earlier that night.
That’s according to court documents filed in the case against Abel Dubon-Castillo. Dubon-Castillo faces a charge of murder in relation to a shooting that left Aracely Torres dead, and her husband and daughter injured with gunshot wounds.
In the probable cause affidavit filed in Daviess County Superior Court, investigating officers from Washington Police Department state that Dubon-Castillo came to the home in the 1800 block of McCormick Avenue with a 9mm handgun at approximately 10:51 p.m. on February 4.
Police said the initial reason the man came to the home was to talk about “being with” his ex-girlfriend, Torres’ daughter. During this time, Dubon-Castillo’s wife reportedly showed up to the home and got into an argument with the man. Torres and her husband tried to intervene, and that is when witnesses told police Dubon-Castillo pulled out his handgun and pointed it at Torres’ head. A physical altercation ensued where the woman’s husband was able to take the gun from Dubon-Castillo. At that time Dubon-Castillo and his wife left the residence.
Police arrived at the home to investigate the incident and seized the 9mm handgun before attempting to locate Dubon-Castillo at his St. George Drive residence in Washington. At this time more family members came to the McCormick Ave. residence to have a family meeting about what had just occurred.
Police noted meeting Dubon-Castillo’s brother at the St. George Drive location, but not being able to locate Dubon-Castillo at the residence at that time. While there, at approximately 11:58 p.m., dispatch reported a call of shots fired at the original McCormick Ave. address.
When police arrived back at the location, they found a bloody scene with multiple people injured. Officers noted the sounds of a struggle near the back of the home. When police went back they saw the stepfather strike Dubon-Castillo in the head with a firearm.
Police said Dubon-Castillo had heavy bleeding an severe injuries to his head, while the stepfather had been shot in the right arm and was bleeding heavily.
During interviews with the gunshot victims, it was learned that as the family was discussing the earlier altercation, Dubon-Castillo had returned to the home with a rifle and began firing into the residence.
The stepfather told police after he had been shot and wounded he retreated to the back of the home with another person where they waited for Dubon-Castillo to attempt to disarm him. When the suspect came to that area, the other person struck Dubon-Castillo with a chair, while the stepfather attacked with a 2×4 piece of lumber. The stepfather told police that Dubon-Castillo continued to fight them even after being disarmed, before they were able to subdue the man.
Police also noted in interviews with witnesses that Dubon-Castillo had previously threatened his ex by giving her two 9mm bullets, indicating one was for her, and the other was for her current boyfriend.
While Torres was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, the other two gunshot victims and Dubon-Castillo were taken to hospitals for treatment of their injuries.
Washington Police announced on February 12 that Dubon-Castillo had been released from the hospital and taken directly to the Daviess County Jail.
Court records show that Dubon-Castillo appeared for an initial hearing on Monday where he learned of the charges against him.
Dubon-Castillo faces the following charges;
- Murder
- Attempted murder (x2)
- A level 1 felony
- Burglary with a deadly weapon
- A level 2 felony
- Intimidation
- A level 5 felony
Dubon-Castillo is next due in court for a pretrial conference on March 12, with a jury trial tentatively scheduled for June 18.
