VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Do you or someone you know need help overcoming an addiction? The Vigo County Health Department has a new, free program that could be the answer.
“Peer Recovery Services works with people who are trying to beat their addiction,” Shonna Frye said. “Often clients who use the program are also going through the criminal justice system, but the program is available to anyone needing help.”
Frye overcame her addiction and is now a recovery coach. She teaches classes and works with clients to provide support and also helps them find the resources they need, from housing to medical care.
Frye and her supervisor agree it’s about treating the whole person and letting them know they can be successful.
“I bring the personal experience,” Frye explained. “I try to set an example to my clients and try to show them if I can do it, you can do it. That this might just be a speed bump for them, not the end of the road.”
Molly Isles is a social services supervisor and she spoke about the process of helping those in need.
“We’re able to step in and start working with them and help them understand they don’t have to live like that anymore,” Isles said. “We teach them new ways of living, new perspectives about themselves.”
