TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One local disc golf group started their annual fundraising series on Saturday.
Crossroads Disc Golf Club is a part of a state-wide series of tournaments called the Wintry Indiana Frozen Fundraiser Series, or WIFFS. This is now the 12th year that they have hosted the first tournament of the series at Deming Park.
All of these events are for charity and to replenish the local foods banks. They wanted to find a way to help give back to these food banks after they typically get hit hard over the holidays.
Since its beginning, they have given over $350,000 to charities and food banks across the state and over $100,000 to the Wabash Valley area. This specific tournament goes directly to 14th and Chesnut in Terre Haute.
Chadwick McKenzie is the president of the Crossroads Disc Golf Club, and he has nothing but praise for the generosity of the Wabash Valley.
“The camaraderie of all the people that come out to play and support our local charity. We have seen a lot of the same faces and a lot of new faces over the years. It shows the dedication our community has to help do something for a good cause,” said McKenzie.
He also wanted to discuss how much the group has grown with the rise in popularity that the sport has gained.
“Disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. The only thing faster is pickleball. The number of members that were a part of this across the state when I started was about 60,000. That number is almost up to 300,000 now,” added McKenzie.
Officials said that this year they are trying to break the record for donations received.
