TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One of the most iconic buildings in Terre Haute is undergoing some changes.
The Vigo County Courthouse is undergoing various changes to try and make the area more welcoming. One of these changes includes cleaning up old trees that have stood in front of the building.
In the spring, trees will be replanted in the area to try and make it look more vibrant. There is also a plan to revitalize some of the features that have been a part of the courthouse since its beginning.
Vigo County Commissioner, Mark Clinkenbeard, goes over some of these changes.
“We are going to be repainting the courthouse dome later this year and also the Soldiers and Sailors Monument needs significant work. It is an important part of this project, and we want to make sure that it is here for a long time to come,” said Clinkenbeard.
Officials say that this location is one of the staples of this area and that it is important to try and make it look as nice as possible. All of these improvements are part of a bigger picture to try and make the downtown area the best it can be.
Clinkenbeard said changes like these are nothing but positive steps to make Terre Haute a better place.
“It is the front door of our downtown. We want to make sure that the courthouse is in great shape for future generations including the monument, the trees around it, and the dome. We are trying to take an overall approach to try and beautify the area and keep it looking good,” added Clinkenbeard.
The process of cleaning up the trees has started, however, changes to the monument and dome will begin when the weather gets a little warmer.
