ST.-MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Event organizers for the annual Hunger Bust Fun Run/Walk presented the record-breaking proceeds to Providence Food Pantry on Thursday.
After more than 200 people participated in the 11th annual Hunger Bust Fun Run/Walk hosted by The Sisters of Providence, the $14,197.27 raised was presented to Sister Maureen Fallen, director of the pantry. At last year’s event, $9,243 was raised.
The pantry is financed entirely by donations. Each year the food pantry serves around 3,000 families in the West Terre Haute community. Sister Maureen noted that in the past year, more than 14,000 people in the community have been served. Sister Maureen also said this year’s proceeds will help to provide food for two months, adding that it costs $20 to help feed a family of five.
“This will help pay for the food we need to provide,” Sister Maureen said. “On Sept. 21, we served approximately 400 individuals and we have served 440 families during the month of September.”
The food pantry, located at 701 W. National Ave. in West Terre Haute, accepts donations from 9:15-10:15 a.m. on Tuesdays or on Thursdays from 6:30-11 a.m.
Sister Maureen said the pantry has approximately 65 volunteers, including 12 Sisters of Providence and two Providence Associates.
To continue serving those in need, the Providence Food Pantry will host a garage sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the pantry to raise funds to benefit the West Terre Haute Community.
Providence Food Pantry is open from 8-10:30 a.m. every Thursday. For more information, call 812-535-2544 or email Sister Maureen Fallon.
