NEWTON, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Newton man has been arrested and charged with first degree murder and aggravated battery.
Illinois State Police said the investigation stemmed from June 8, when 59-year-old Terry L. Eastep, of Newton, was found in a residence in the 100 block of Marion Street with life-threatening injuries. Eastep was taken to a medical facility where he would later die from those injuries on June 11.
Illinois State Police were then requested by the Newton Police Department to investigate the death as a homicide.
Following the investigation, on Monday, ISP arrested 30-year-old Paul S. Schoonover, of Newton. Schoonover was taken to the Jasper County Jail to await a bond hearing.
Court records indicate that Schoonover has been charged with the following
- First degree murder with intent to kill/injure (x2)
- A class M felony
- First degree murder with strong probability to kill/injure (x2)
- A class M felony
- First degree murder with forcible entry
- A class M felony
- Aggravated battery with great bodily harm
- A class 3 felony
