MARTIN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed three tornados touched down in Indiana on Sunday, including one in Martin County.
Cameron Wolf, Emergency Management Director, says the area is very rural.
“We were having to go down the road and cut our way to get to the two people that were hurt.”
Wolf said the County sent equipment and was helping to clear trees that were blocking the roadways.
Wolf confirmed, the tornado destroyed two homes and took down many trees and power lines in Rutherford and Lost River Township. The tornado claimed one life and sent another person via air ambulance to an Evansville hospital.
Wolf said individuals and organizations from within the county as well as outside of the county has offered support.
“We’ve had good support. It just takes time when you’re dealing with something like that. Because there was literally tree, upon tree, upon tree, upon tree. I mean it was just solid. So, it’s taking a while to get that cleared up.”
And while they’re trying to clear things up, Wolf asks people to avoid the hardest hit areas.
“Unfortunately, when something like this happens, you’ve got a lot of sightseers. I know people want to see things, but there’s plenty of stuff out there on the media and Facebook and stuff, they can probably get better views of the damage on that instead of trying to physically go there, because it just makes it much harder for responders to do their jobs.
Daviess County Emergency Management confirmed damage from several downed trees as well as hail damage. Daviess County said they are waiting for the NWS to confirm if a tornado touched down in the area.
