WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Terre Haute man appeared in court to face multiple felony charges, including armed robbery, after police said he gave them a false name and social security number when spotted by police in West Terre Haute.
According to court documents, Paul E. Wilson, 41, of Terre Haute was found in the area of S. Hobson Place and W. High Drive in West Terre Haute on the evening of Thursday, May 4.
An Indiana State Police Trooper had been looking for an unrelated subject in the area when he spotted Wilson. When asking for identification, Wilson reportedly gave the trooper two different social security numbers. After learning Wilson’s true identity, dispatch reported Wilson was wanted in Vigo County for multiple felony warrants. A search also found Wilson to be in possession of methamphetamine.
Wilson was placed under arrest and taken to the Vigo County Jail.
Wilson’s felony charges stem from the events of February 4 of this year, when police said he met a woman at “Glenda’s Bar” in West Terre Haute and proceeded to steal her truck at knifepoint.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the victim told police she had only known Wilson for a few days prior to agreeing to meet him in the parking lot of Glenda’s Bar.
After an argument, the victim reportedly told Wilson she did not wish to see him anymore, causing Wilson to get angry.
“[Victim] advised they were in the truck at this time. Paul was in the passenger seat and she was in the driver’s seat. Paul got angry with her and told her he was taking the truck. [Victim] argued with him and Paul then brandished a knife and told her he was going to cut her. [Victim] exited the truck and Paul moved over from the passenger side to the driver’s seat. Paul then left in the truck.”
Probable Cause Affidavit filed in Vigo County Court
Police never located Wilson at the time of the initial report leading to the issuance of a felony warrant ahead of Wilson’s May 4 arrest.
Wilson appeared in Vigo County Superior Court 4 on Friday where he was appointed a public defender, and entered a preliminary plea of not guilty.
Wilson has been charged with the following;
- Armed robbery
- A level 3 felony
- Intimidation with a deadly weapon
- A level 5 felony
- Auto theft
- A level 6 felony
Judge Michael Eldred set Wilson’s bond at $10,000 with 10% cash allowable and ordered Wilson to have no contact with the victim in the case.
The state was also given 72-hours to file formal charges related to Wilson’s May 4 arrest.
Wilson has a bail review hearing scheduled for Thursday, May 11 at 10:30 a.m. with his Jury Trial scheduled for August 24 at 8:30 a.m.
