TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– Over 100 volunteers spent their Earth Day morning planting trees in one Terre Haute neighborhood.
Trees Inc. held their annual “tree planting” event, bringing more than 120 trees to the area near Chase Street and Tippecanoe Street. President for the organization, Ann Ryan, said it keeps a decades-long tradition going in the community.
“Trees Inc. has been planting for more than 30 years,” she said. “It’s so amazing to think about those little oak trees we planted thirty years ago, and now, 30+ ft. tall, producing acorns, keeping our city cool and just a great quality of life.”
The event was in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, who are building new homes in the area. Ryan said they were working to fill gaps in the tree row, which they do alongside the city. Saturday, they had over 100 students volunteer from Rose-Hulman, as well as several from GE Aviation.
Ryan said she hopes the initiative can promote the benefits trees can bring to the environment– and to the community as well.
“They will have a good start in life and be a part of our city for many years to come,” she said.
