VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An initiative in Vigo County helps increase children’s confidence and set them up for success in the classroom.
On Monday in Terre Haute, Mayor Duke Bennett proclaimed Shoe Bus Week in Vigo County this week.
The event raises awareness about an effort by the Terre Haute Women’s Club. Each year, the club gives 800 – 1,000 pairs of new shoes to Vigo County school children in need. Each child also receives two pairs of socks with their new shoes.
Club president of the Terre Haute Women’s Club, Kati Colvin, explains the need of the community.
“We’ve seen a lot over the years where there’s been tennis shoes that have been held together by duct tape, broken shoe laces, kids with flipflops during the winter time so being able to raise money and get the community’s support is really special,” Colvin said.
