TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– About 48 hours after Winter Storm Elliott rolled through the Wabash Valley, officials are issuing reminders for drivers to continue to use caution on the roadways.
Crews have continued to work on snow-covered streets around the area as conditions have continued to improve, but Greene County emergency management director Roger Axe still recommended people to stay home if they could.
“This is a time to enjoy your home. To curl up with a book, put on a pot of chili, and just enjoy being indoors,” he said.
Axe said Greene County went from a travel watch to a travel advisory early on Saturday, a sign of the progress crews have made. For those who were planning to hit the roads this weekend, Axe said it was important to make sure your car had a full tank and a number of materials as well.
“Call ahead if you’re going far, and carry a blanket,” he said. “And a lot of people don’t think about this, but carry an extra pair of socks, and a towel, because if you get you’re feet wet, you’re toast.”
Axe said the rising temperatures are one of the biggest factors in helping the roads continue to clear.
It has warmed up a little bit,” he said. “We’re in a slow warming trend, hopefully the wind will cease and we will lose the wind chills, and by this time next week, this will all be over.”
Updates on current conditions around the state can be found on the Indiana Department of Transportation’s website.
