INDIANAPOLIS — What started out as a traffic stop during a firearms investigation resulted in a suspect and police exchanging gunfire Friday afternoon.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said detectives with the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force conducted a traffic stop around 1:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of North Illinois Street as part of an ongoing firearms investigation.
During the stop, an officer was escorting a male from the rear passenger seat. Police say he shoved the escorting officer before taking off running.
The officer ran after the suspect, calling out on the radio that the suspect was armed. While chasing the suspect, police say the officer ordered the suspect to stop, but the suspect kept running.
Instead, police say the suspect fired his weapon. The officer returned fire, leading to the suspect throwing down his weapon.
The officer was able to take the suspect into custody without any further incident. No one was injured by gunfire in the incident. The area between 32nd and Illinois to 34th and Illinois was closed while police investigated the scene.
The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation. A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will also conduct a hearing.
