TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — There is an immense need for blood supplies due to a decline as a result to the coronavirus.
Hospitals have resumed surgeries, and with stay at home orders being relaxed, they anticipate an increase in trauma cases.
Penny Schroeder, Area Vice President & Director of Donor Services of Versiti Blood Center of Indiana, said they are in a dire need for blood. She noted if community members haven’t donated before that the staff would walk them through the process.
Schroeder said there is a high need for universal blood type O-Negative, and donors have been asked to schedule appointments before donating.
Schroeder said the biggest concern is to make sure blood is available for patients who need it.
Versiti Blood Center employees are following social distancing during appointments, and are taking temperatures of staff and donors before they are allowed in the facility.
