CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A local animal shelter is raising funds for a new building that will offer more space to their dogs.
The Clay County Humane Society is trying to raise a total of $350,000. The shelter says it will use the funds to construct another building behind its current facility that will be able to house 40 dog kennels.
The kennels would give the dogs a 5′-by-5′ indoor space and a 10-foot outdoor space so they can enjoy the best of both worlds depending on the weather. Clay County Humane Society board members say that the expansion is needed.
“When it gets really cold outside one of the things we do is bring all of the animals inside,” board member Amy Dierdorff said. “So as you can imagine, with the limited space we have to set up some crates and kennels where we don’t usually have them, so that can make for a little bit more cramped conditions for the animals and the folks trying to work with the animals.”
The shelter says monetary donations of any amount will make an impact and that most of its funding comes from the community’s support.
“70% actually comes in from donations and fundraising so we’re very dependent on the community and it’s amazing the job that they do because we wouldn’t be able to operate without them,” board member Toni Carter said.
“A lot of people think that you have to give a big donation to make an impact, but really, a lot of people have made the 50, the 100, the 200 dollar donations and that really makes a big impact for our facility,” Dierdorff said.
Shelter officials also want the public to know that this Friday and Saturday, the shelter will hold a Black Friday adoption event, where any animal with some black fur can be adopted at half price.
