TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Indiana General Assembly will meet in a special session next week and Governor Holcomb is calling on lawmakers to discuss abortion.
It comes after the US Supreme Court ruling on Friday that overturned Roe v. Wade.
Members of the Indiana Democratic Party traveled the state Monday and made a stop at the Vigo County Democratic Party headquarters. They spoke in opposition to the Supreme Court’s ruling and any change in the law that would prevent abortions in Indiana.
Indiana Democratic Party Vice-Chair Myla Eldridge says it’s the vulnerable populations who will feel the effects of this ruling the most.
“It’s a sad time in America for women. Generations of women for the first time in 50 years will be forced to make dangerous decisions many of us thought would be left in history books,” said Eldridge. “And what horrifies me most, underprivileged women especially black and brown Hoosiers in urban communities, will see their futures dashed or their lives will be put at risk because of the nation’s highest court backed a small minority over the large majority of Americans who want to keep living up to the foundations and the freedoms of the United States.”
Indianapolis politician Ali Brown who represents Indianapolis City-County Council District 5 explained the story of her medical situation regarding a past pregnancy scare and the need for access to abortion for her
future.
“I know, and trust me, that it’s not just Democrat women who feel this way, it’s Republican women too. I represent an area who had never been represented by a Democrat before, and I talk to a lot of Republican women. We all feel under attack, we all lost our rights together, and we’ll all be voting together in November,” said Brown.
Governor Eric Holcomb released the following statement when the Supreme Court ruling was released last week:
“The Supreme Court’s decision is clear, and it is now up to the states to address this important issue. We’ll do that in short order in Indiana. I’ve already called the General Assembly back on July 6, and I expect members to take up this matter as well.
I have been clear in stating I am pro-life. We have an opportunity to make progress in protecting the sanctity of life, and that’s exactly what we will do.”
The special session is planned for July 6.
