GREENE COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A road closure has gone from bad to worse in Greene County and it’s causing more trouble than expected.
State Road 54 in Ridgeport was meant to be a quick repavement. But it’s now predicted to be under construction until September. Law enforcement in the area have set up four detour locations. But some drivers are choosing to ignore those signs.
There have also been reports of excessive speeding, barricades being removed, cars getting stuck in mud and even damaged property. Deputies and INDOT officials have returned to the detour sites multiple times to address issues and are now cracking down.
“I would encourage people to read the signs and understand that it is a dangerous situation it’s not closed just for fun I mean it’s for safety,” home-owner Gary Glaser said.
“I know they’re suffering through this detour until we get the highway back open, but they got to drive a little slower they’ve got to be a little more concious of the more narrow roads. You’re going to be dealin with farm implements you’re going to be dealing with slow moving vehicles, soft shoulders, things of that nature. They’re just going to have to bare with indot until they get the road repaired and slow down a little bit,” Jim Omalley detective sergeant with Greene County Sheriffs Department said.
Those who drive past the final detour sign will be given tickets if they are caught in the area.
