VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Vermillion County received $1 million from the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Community Crossings Matching Grant.
Vermillion County Commissioner Tim Yocum said that this money will go towards fixing various roads around the county.
Counties with a population of 50,000 or less only have to match 25% depending on the reward. Yocum said that this is vital for small counties.
“That was a big thing when they changed that for populations less than 50,000 to only 25%,” Yocum explained. “A lot of these small counties did not have the funds to match it fifty fifty on a million dollar grant.”
Newport resident Jacob Thurman acknowledged that some roads in the county do need work done. However, he said he is pleased to see a bigger emphasis from local government to improve roads.
“It makes me feel good about them wanting to actually put money back into the community and fix up the roads that actually need it,” Thurman said.
Yocum stated that having quality roads are crucial in attracting people to the area.
“Good roads are a very important part of any county,” Yocum said. “You want it to look attractive to people.”
