TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — At Reach Services in Terre Haute, the main goal is helping veterans get reestablished in their communities.
But it may be harder for some more than others and could result in homelessness. This inspired the organization to launch a fundraiser called Operation Vanguard.
Patrick Green, Lead Case Manager at Reach Services, said it’s all about raising awareness.
“Operation vanguard raises awareness about the homeless situation here in the Vigo County area,” he said. “We help veterans on our side and Reach Services helps others in the community. We’re just trying to raise awareness and funds to help veterans.”
Reach Services employees and other volunteers will camp out for four days in front of their building to raise money for the organization and the food pantry.
This year is the first year that Green and his co-worker, Autumn Dowell, will participate in the demonstration. She said the cause holds a special place in her heart.
“My son receives services here at Reach. So I have donated in the past,” Dowell said. “I think it’s a really good cause. I know a lot of people don’t notice homeless people. But you see them out here. You can tell that they’re cold and hungry.”
Organizers expect anywhere between 15 to 20 participants over the weekend. Green said he hopes they walk away with one lesson.
“There are homeless people out there at all times,” Green said. “It’s a growing number and not just in our area, but everywhere around the country. It’s something that we need to be more aware of and do our part as individuals.”
The group didn’t set a fundraising goal for this year’s demonstration, but monetary, food or clothing donation are being accepted.
