TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — As Hispanic Heritage Month winds down, cultural celebrations continue across the Wabash Valley.
At Indiana State University, plenty of Latin themed festivities have been held. School officials say this year’s theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is “hope.”
During this time, students have had opportunities to engage in various carefully selected activities.
Multicultural Services and Program Director, Martha Reed, said everything is planned out to highlight the uniqueness of multiple Latin American countries.
“We sit down and speak with students and see what they’re interested in, what’s going to bring thing backs from their heritage and honor them? We want it to be a learning experience for them, but we also want the students to have fun as well,” Reed said.
She adds this year has already brought large crowds for each event.
On Sept. 30, Tilson Concert Hall hosted the school’s Wind Orchestra to kick of its season with a “Tribute to Hispanic Heritage Month” concert.
Through the sights and sounds of Cuabn culture, student Jackson Armes, says experiences like this, provide opportunities for all to try something new.
“I think it’s really important to highlight different cultures in terms of music. We don’t hear a lot of that today. It’s great when a particular culture is highlighted and celebrated,” Armes added.
Although it’s a busy time for Reed, this month serves as a time to reflect on her journey as a proud Hispanic.
“I was born in Panama City, Panama, so that’s my connection there. I came to the United States as a small child. I had to learn to speak and English here, as did my mother,” She added. “At that time, there were few people with our heritage.”
Now, Reed along with school officials help promote a bigger goal, allowing students to learn.
“To find more people that speak my own language has been a wonderful experience here at Indiana State. That is our hope, that students will have a better understanding of culture and that students who have that culture and heritage feel more included,” She added.
Student Lukas Howell says he encourages everyone to step out of their comfort zone.
“There’s nothing like stepping out and encompassing yourself in another culture to have an opportunity to learn and grow as a person. It’s fun,” Howell added.
