MITCHELL, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Mitchell man and his mother were arrested after being accused of dealing meth and heroin in and around Lawrence County.
According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Matt Ames, authorities established probable cause that Estell Hetrick, 40, of Mitchell was in possession of a large quantity of methamphetamine. When police went to search the apartment he shared with his mother on Wade Street, they witnessed him riding away from the apartment complex on a bike.
Hetrick was stopped by a trooper who identified himself as law enforcement, before he allegedly jumped back on the bike and rode away. He was then seen throwing a bag into a nearby shrub that was later recovered and found to contain around 4 grams of meth.
A search warrant of the apartment revealed several items associated with drug dealing. It was discovered that before the arrival of the police, Hetrick’s mother, Susan Voorhies, 70, had removed a large quantity of drugs from the home, and hid them under a blanket behind the apartment next door.
In the hiding spot, police found approximately 63 grams of meth, 5 grams of heroin and 3 grams of marijuana.
While Hetrick was fleeing on the bike, police say he swallowed the meth and heroin that he was hiding, and began to have an adverse reaction to it. Police took him to a hospital.
Later both Hetrick and Voorhies were brought to the Lawrence County Jail.
