TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Clabber Girl Bake Shop Café on Tuesday announced it will close its doors for good July 1.
“Thank you to all our customers and employees who we’ve had the pleasure of serving over the last 18 years,” a Facebook post said.
According to the social media post, the Clabber Girl manufacturing facility will “continue to remain a part of Downtown Terre Haute and we look forward to seeing what comes next for the historic 900 Wabash Ave. building.”
The building, located on the corner of 9th and Wabash Avenue in downtown Terre Haute, has been a staple for the community since its opening in 1893. Local businessman Greg Gibson purchased the building last year. It currently houses office space for Clabber Girl and the café, both owned and operated by B&G Foods since 2019.
Francis and Herman Hulman formed Hulman & Co. in the 1850’s. Some 40 years later, the company started manufacturing baking powder.
Clabber Girl really became big once Tony Hulman Jr. started a nationwide sales campaign in 1930.
In 2006, Clabber Girl announced an expansion of it’s manufacturing plant downtown. For many years, it’s produced a wide variety of products including pudding and pie filling and corn starch.
