TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Local realtors gathered Monday to celebrate the Fair Housing Act, an important housing industry law that protects people from discrimination while renting, buying or getting a mortgage.
Members of the Terre Haute Area Association of Realtors were joined by Mayor Duke Bennett for a fair-housing proclamation. Tom Chiado, treasurer of the association, said realtors take an oath to make sure people are treated fairly and equally in the housing industry.
“With the Fair Housing Act, we moved a giant step forward,” Chiado said. “Every professional realtor who is a member of the Terre Haute Area Association of Realtors understands what the Fair Housing Act means.
“Everybody needs to be treated equally in the housing market,” Chiado continued. “That’s really what it’s all about. Realtors are sworn to do that. When we become a realtor, we take an oath to follow our code of ethics and we make sure that happens.”
In the meantime, Chiado recommends anyone thinking of selling their home to do so now. Demand currently exceeds supply, with more buyers than sellers at present.
