TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/ WAWV) — The Terre Haute Humane Society took in a dog who needed more medical attention than most. While this is a challenge, some of the staff said this recovery is one that reminds them why they love what they do.
Hercules came to the human society on Monday. Due to a severe case of demodex, a type of mange, Hercules faces a battle before he can be adopted.
Sarah Valentine, the general manager of THHS, said it will be months before Hercules can be adopted.
“He has been a fighter, and he has the greatest personality,” Valentine said. “He is super sweet. He loves to give kisses, and it’s going to be a long road but he’s going to be great.”
While this is a very severe case, Valentine said it is not uncommon for the humane society to take in dogs with demodex.
“We actually have three in the building right now that have demodex,” she said.
The humane society uses medicated shampoo on Hercules every other day. He also came in with an infection, so he needed other medications as well.
Valentine posted a fundraiser on Facebook. Many different shelters shared the link, and it has now raised more than $1,500 for Hercules and dogs like him.
“We have our good days and bad days, but we just want to say thank you to the community for their support that we’ve gotten so far with the fundraiser,” Valentine said.
